Understanding SEER Ratings for Your Home

When you shop for a new air conditioner, you will see a SEER rating on every unit. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it measures how much cooling a system delivers per unit of energy over an entire cooling season. The higher the number, the more efficient the system.

Older units often run at SEER 10 or below. Modern systems start around SEER 14 and climb past SEER 20 for high-efficiency models. In a hot climate like San Antonio, where your AC runs much of the year, that difference adds up to real money on your monthly bill.

Higher SEER units cost more upfront, but the energy savings frequently pay back the difference over the life of the system — often faster than homeowners expect. Rebates and financing can close that gap even further.
